While Mom’s Away

For Christmas, I asked Mark for an opportunity to attend a conference with a friend about Biblical counseling for women and the theme was on suffering. He immediately agreed and signed me up right away. It was a wonderful time with my friend and her friends’ from church who were so welcoming. And the speakers. Ya’ll, if you don’t know who Katherine Wolf is, go to Hope Heals and grab her book. She’s got good stuff to say about praising God in the darkness and the unknown. Very encouraging for me.

While I was gone, Mark manned the fort solo and did a wonderful job. I so enjoyed seeing the pictures of my kids having a blast and making memories.

Forts were built and I didn’t have to be the one to tell them to clean them up.

Outside play. Note the four year old is without a jacket and the bigs have one on. Not Mark’s fault…these kids don’t notice climate differences (and seriously, she has a big ol’ brace on that holds in a lot of warmth).

At least she got bundled up for s’mores.

Needless to say, Tobin has no qualms about getting dirty and marshmallows are now on his happy list of foods (which is quite long).

Fire pits! Yes! See the 13 year old, in the middle of the polar vortex, in a t-shirt.

Babies bundled up and ready to go are my weakness.

Happy Birthday Silas, 2019!

Silas started out our birthday year turning 12! He enjoyed all of his building gifts and totally loved his ice cream cake. We also got to venture out to see Into the Spider-verse thanks to the discount Tuesday nights!

This was our third birthday with Silas! Each year we are all growing and learning and hopefully, showing Christ to one another. I can’t wait to see how much he grows this next year. By the way, he is already plotting his 13th birthday trip next year!

Murphy’s Law Camping

We decided to start out the new year by going camping. Yeah, it was fun BUUUUUTTTT…it was not an ideal camp.

Point one: We drove our Crimson Cruiser pulling the camper through monsoon rain. Once we got to the site, in Florida, we were setting up. I stepped in the camper and noticed the ceiling was coming down.

Touched it. Wet.

Walked to one of the beds. Looked up. Wall paper was bubbling.

My heart sunk.

Tobin had croup (but thankfully didn’t need steroids). Emmie began running a fever on Saturday.

Emmie and Malachi, the fever kids, got to enjoy a movie while everyone else explored.

By Sunday, with three kids actively running a fever and my dread at the wet spots on our camper, we made the call to head home early. We used our extra day to extensively clean the camper and start tearing it apart inside as well as sealing it.

Needless to say, our camper is about to get a giant remodel instead of just the paint and fabric upgrade I intended.

Now, on to the fun pictures.

Tot and Lulu did great…they really wanted to eat all the squirrels but nary a squirrel was injured during this trip.

Aunt Yaya and Uncle Jay gave us a projector and projector sheet. Ya’ll, a new tradition was started and it was a blast!

Sick baby Tobin got nestled up all warm and hammed it up.

Mark took Georgia’s hands-free law literally and shed a few months off of Zoe’s life.

Neuro Adventures

Emmie had a check up at the start of the year with her neurologist and orthotist. We had noticed that her neurologist, Dr. Wolf always wears crazy socks. So, I searched online and found some super superhero socks at John’s Crazy Socks. Emmie was so excited to give them to him and he made a big deal about it.

He was so excited to see how awesome Emmie is doing. We go back in six months. She didn’t want to pose with him so he went to her and gave the goofy pose. By the way, her amazing shirt, I purchased from Littlest Warrior. I absolutely love these shirts! I have plans for her to rock the “Rare Jewel” shirt soon.

We have some amazing friends in Atlanta right now and they offered for our kids to come over and play the next time we went to Atlanta. We haven’t seen them in a few years and the kids were iffy on going. But once we got there, they settled right in. Needless to say, they had an absolute blast!

Meanwhile, Emmie and I had a girls’ day complete with ice cream.

After I picked up the kiddos, we headed out of Atlanta (which is an adventure in and of itself) and made a pitstop for pizza where I learned that Tobin likes olives. He is so my son.

Happy New Year 2019!

We didn’t get to have a big family Thanksgiving dinner this year and life in December is always crazy. So, the kids all decided we should do it for New Year’s Day. We broke out our “thankful” tablecloth and wrote down what we were thankful for. It wasn’t such a bad way to start the new year.

That evening, the much anticipated Nerf War went down.

We found these great inflatable barriers for this year’s war.

They couldn’t hide everyone though!

December Randoms

Emmie’s last blood pressure check! She had to be on midodrine after her surgery to keep her blood pressure up. Basically, she was on it for three weeks but slowly weaned off of it and each dose required a blood pressure check before getting the meds. She was amazing and her brothers and sisters had fun checking their pressure with her!

Getting ready to be a footballer.

Tobin can, occasionally, be the king of chill. Don’t underestimate him. He can also be Super Descructo Kid. But he is so cute when he chills.

Tobin helped me test out our new reading chair.

Everyone has been happy that Emmie is home! Including her buddy, Josiah.

Ya’ll, the way these littles love their big sister and the way she willingly loves on them, it melts my heart. Don’t get me wrong, Zoe can be very much a typical moody teenager but she can also be loving and caring for her little brothers and sisters. When it’s movie night, you can often find one or both of these guys sprawled on her.

Now to the furry kids. Ignore that Tot needs a giant haircut. Just focus on how these two snuggle up with each other. They are fiercely close and it is so much fun to see.

Emmie lost her first tooth! Yes. She’s just four. She did get them early (right at 3 months). But this is the earliest that we have seen our kids loose a tooth. Bryant got teeth at two months but didn’t loose them until 5 or 6. Emmie’s an overachiever.

Tobin sometimes cuddles in bed with me. And sometimes we enjoy seeing each other in the phone. Yeah, I know I have a double chin. I’m working on it now with an attitude, diet and exercise change. Sometimes, though, you just have to share the cuteness no matter what you look like. Memories for my crazy kids.

Our god-daughter’s parents sent the kids the Watch Your Mouth game…ya’ll my kids looked and sounded hilarious! They love it!

While the kids played Watch Your Mouth, Emmie rocked the wig.

How we said good-bye to our crazy 2018! Welcome to 2019!

Happy Birthday, Liam! 2018

We officially gained a third teenager in December! Liam is currently looking hard at joining the Air Force and requested a fighter jet for his birthday cake. He has way too much confidence in me.

However, with my trusty 2-liter of caffeine and a lot of prayers, I think I did a pretty decent job.

It was at the point of this drawing that I realized the cake was going to need to be larger and then things just escalated.

To this!

And this. Five boxes of cake later. Mark did the piping details. Ya’ll. I breathed a sigh of relief when this was done.

Now to birthday gifts:

Liam has requested role-playing games. This kid loves games. We found a Christian RPG game and Papa and Grandmere ordered it for him. They have already enjoyed the quests in it! From there, we found out that one of the guys over this game is an author also AND is a former fighter pilot. Absolutely crazy coincidences!

Thirteenth birthdays are a big deal in our family. Starting with Zoe, we developed the tradition that 13th birthday gifts would be a trip. The birthday kid gets to choose somewhere to go. Zoe got Ukraine because we were going there and she had learned the language. Subsequent trips, unless they choose a mission trip, will be in the lower 48. Ace chose St. Louis for the arch and general architecture. Liam was a little iffy. Mark was supposed to go to training in San Francisco and after much discussion had chosen there. Then the trip got cancelled and he went back to his number one choice…we’ll share about that in a few weeks.

Happy Birthday Zoe! 2018

Zoe turned 16 in December! I can not believe that my first baby is growing up so much and so fast. She is an amazing girl with quick wit, a fierce love, and a strong desire to do it right the first time. She is also extremely smart. We love having teenagers (for real, ya’ll) and I’m so glad Zoe is so patient with me as we learn how to live with teenagers! It’s so exciting watching her grow in her walk with the Lord and in her amazing gift of languages. When she practices in the evenings, it’s music to our ears listening to her speak in whatever language has caught her attention that evening.

Her want was not a new car (sorry ya’ll…that is earned and not a given) but a backpack that she had been asking for. I’ve never spent that much on a backpack but it was something that she strongly desired and we were excited to see her smile when she received it!

Cake choice was a hot chocolate cake. Decadent to say the least and I got to use a kitchen torch to toast the marshmallows on top!

Celebrating Christmas

As, I stated in an earlier post, this season was really special for us. Christmas is all about birth and I really feel that what Emmie has been through has, hopefully, given her new life…a new birth. What a blessing to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the one who gave everything to give us eternal life. And if felt, at the same time, we were able to celebrate the new birth for our Emmie! Oh how I pray it is a new birth and new life for her!

Our Christmas Eve was busy but fun!

Several kids made gifts for each other. This was a sweet present from Ceili Rain.

I love it when we catch their excited reactions to gifts.

Zoe wanted to get Mark a fun t-shirt. She was this and just knew he needed it. It’s from Animaniacs’ Pinky and the Brain. Any time the kids ask what we’re doing, Mark responds with this. Every. Single. Time.

The kids asked for an upgrade from our archaic Wii to a less archaic Wii U. We totally surprised them because they opened all of their gifts (which were labeled with random numbers that I kept a legend of) and it wasn’t in there. We told them to make sure we had opened every gift and to check the tree. In the tree was an envelope that sent them all around the house for clues and ended with them having to recite our church’s memory passage before getting their gift. They were ecstatic.

Tot was clearly amused.
Tobin was all Christmased out.

I guess you can imagine what most of the rest of the day involved.

Merry Christmas with the Grands

The people we can blame thank for making me who I am today. I so love my parents!

WE had so much to celebrate this Christmas season! Emmie reminds us that every day should be celebrated and getting a chance to celebrate Christmas with family reminded us how thankful we were to have everyone gathered around amidst the fun and chaos.

My sister and I are only 18 months apart and we still know how to be goofy! We were working hard to get rid of our middle age chins and Uncle J participated too. Mark was the only one who didn’t need to worry about that double chin though. He’s such a young whipper snapper.

Aunt E, Uncle J and J and E…all grown up!
The Dirty Dozen! Twelve cousins and we can see all of their faces! Win!

Ace decided a selfie was in order while were getting group pictures.

Best Christmas gift for the grands from Aunt E and Uncle J. Granddaddy, naturally called for a s’mores fest after they got it going.

Present time! The kids each open one gift all at once and then show everyone what they got. They keep going until their done. Us adults have a blast watching them and often forget to open any of our gifts!

Papa and Grandmere came to visit around Zoe’s birthday! They enjoy their annual calendar every year!

And the kids loved their treats from Papa and Grandmere! Emmie protected the candy for everyone.
