Family Ministry

I posted a link to this article on Facebook.  It concerns mostly Southern Baptists, but I’m sure it’s relevant to all churches.  It was very interesting in how it presented each of the family-driven ministries.  Here’s a quote:

Why, then, does this new emphasis on family ministry also present a potential problem? Simply this: In many cases, churches are focusing on family ministry as a reaction to dismal retention statistics. It has been repeatedly reported over the past few years that somewhere between 65% and 94% of churched youth drop out of church before their sophomore year of college.[3] As a result, many congregations are shifting their ministry models not because of convictions that have grown from a seedbed of sustained scriptural and theological reflection. Instead, what motivates them is the supposed crisis of abysmal retention rates-a crisis that they plan to solve by launching a series of family ministry programs. Their focus on family ministry is a pragmatic reaction rooted in a desire for numbers with no standard by which to judge the results other than an increasing number of warm bodies.[4]

Want to read more???  Go here.  The article really explains what some churches are doing…not to try and increase numbers, but to actually worship in more of a Biblical model.

And, if you’re curious, our church seems to be more family-based.  We have age-segregated activities but parents are never (ever) discouraged from participating.  In fact, it’s a given that they will participate and help out (as will most of the adults in the church).  It’s also expected that the children will sit through worship and actively participate in it (even singing “Only a Boy Named David” in the middle of the sermon).  It’s also a given that the children will participate in adult activities, such as care group and visitation and, of course, worship.

Anyway, it’s a very well written article and might help some people (who are still scratching their heads) to understand the kind of church we’re attending (and why).

(Did I use the parenthesis enough?  It’s either that or the…)

Bryant’s Six Months Old…almost seven

Yeah, I know I’m late.  Sorry about that.  We’ve just finished an extremely busy wekeend and are looking forward to a little quietness around her (when the kids are sleeping).

Bryant continues to grow.  He’s got several nicknames.

The Weird One:  Getting teeth at two months will earn that right off the bat.  But he wasn’t satisfied with a little weirdness…nope, commando crawling at five months.  He’s also sitting up now.  Last week, I realized he was getting close to sitting up from laying down, so I asked Mark to lower the crib so he didn’t pull up on the crib and fall over.  The day after Mark did that he figured out how to sit up from laying down.  Oh, and pulling up, he’s learned to pull up on things and showed off this morning by pulling up to a stand on the toilet while I brushed his sister’s teeth (yes, the lid was down…girls’ bathroom).  I know he’s not the only child to do all these things so quickly but he’s the only one of our children to do it and it’s just plain weird.

Add to that, that he didn’t cut anymore teeth.  Until last week.  When he cut FOUR at one time.  We could tell that his top teeth were getting close for several weeks.  One day, his gums started bleeding and we noticed one of the front teeth was finally in.  Fast forward, to Friday night and he would not go to sleep and was extremely fussy.  Thirty minutes after tylenol and he was out like a light for a few hours.  He still woke up early.  After all the activity quieted down in the morning, I sat down by him and checked out his mouth.  Sure enough another tooth had broken through.  Then I checked to see if he was close to getting anymore, but then noticed two more on the bottom had come in.  Weird kid.

He’s pushing up on all fours but can’t figure out how to go that way and is content to go really fast commando style!

Velcro Baby:  He will grab on and stay attached and will not let go.  He also enjoys doing this to any food we may be trying to consume if he is in our laps.  And toys and hair.  It’s all easily attachable to the velcro baby.

The Snuggler:  He can cuddle up next to you and just not move and make you melt.  This is especially true at naptimes and right when he first wakes up.  Ahhh, cuddles from the Snuggler are super good!

Not sure how much longer Ceili Rain is going to be in diapers so one day when they each happened to be wearing their respective gender color, I grabbed some shots.  Aren’t they adorable???

(Oh, the necklace is a teething necklace made of amber.  It’s supposed to help ease the teething pain.)

And he did go to the doctor in January after he turned 6 months.  Here’s his stats:

15 lbs 13 oz (45%)
28 3/4 inches tall (97%)
17 1/2 inches in the head (80%)

As typical for my babies, they slim up about this time.  At least he’s not weird in that respect.  He’s eating about three times a day and nursing about three times.  Once those teeth get fully in we’ll work on just blending foods with the hand blender and feeding him.  He definitely loves to eat…especially mango and avocado!  And most of this information on here is to remind me when I update his baby book so  you can ignore it if you choose.

Contest

Alright, so I’ve gotten a couple of good comments about the This Picture, so I thought we’d have a Caption Contest.

You have until Next Friday to come up with a good caption for this picture:

The winning caption will get their own personal bag of HopeSuds.

What is HopeSuds?  Well, as we speak, the blog that I stalk like all get out because I’ve never met them…yet and her life is just a mirror of mine with one less child (for now) read has it’s writers in Uganda adopting their daughter!  She and her husband created HopeSuds to help fund their adoption.  Hopesuds is all natural laundry detergent and, in my personal opinion is wonderful!  We purchased several to give as Christmas gifts.  Ya know, because we have dirty friends and family.  We also got some for ourselves and I truly enjoyed it.

So, caption away and by Friday, midnight, our family will decide who the winner may be!    And, while you’re brainstorming about the best caption ever, click on over and pick up some HopeSuds for yourself.  Lora Lyn is blogging while in Uganda and from her posts, God is definitely at work, although it takes some time to see it through all the tears.

I will count the two posts that were left on the previous day’s blog too!

Skating and Tubing

I did get to venture out to do activities two days.  On Monday, I went snowboarding…okay, well, let’s just say I took a lesson.  The only way I could stop was to fall down so I stayed on the bunny slope and since I didn’t have any ski pants/or ski bib, my rear was numb for hours (I’m talking hours) afterwards.  Then Friday, the day before we left, I got to go skating and tubing.  That was fun!  I’d never skated outdoors.

And several of our kids had never skated at all.

But that didn’t stop them from trying…

And falling…

And trying some more…

Ace got really good before we left.  I was proud of how hard he tried.  He fell pretty hard a few times too but he got right back up and tried again.  Josiah was more interested in building a snow castle for a long while.  I was so glad we didn’t have to pay for him to skate!

Let me just say that snow tubing is a blast and is really physically demanding.  My arms were sore for three days after we went.  But it was so worth it!

 Yes, this is me.
 And this is Papa!
Zoe…she flipped her tube once, laughed, got back up and went again.  She thought that was really cool.
Even Grandmere tried it out.
I missed posting pictures of J, O, and G going but they were with us and had a great time too.  We were able to race down some of the runs.
At the end of the day, it’s all about chillin’ and relaxin’ dude.  I took a breather for a few minutes and watched Zoe and my nieces and nephews go.   If only I had a video of me trying to get up out of that knee high snow drift.

Back at the Ranch…

Well, with several little ones that couldn’t take being out in the cold and snow for long periods of time, I and the grandparents and Aunt B did a lot of indoor maintenance.  So, we got lots of fun pictures of the kids…Oh, before I start…want to know how much luggage and stuff one has to take to be snowed in in the mountains with our six kids???  No, well, tough, I’m going to show you.

Visiting cousins…
Bryant was about to launch an attack because K had his toy!

This is O with her little brother K and Ace holding Bryant.
Getting ready to just take our five out (Bryant never went out but once briefly for pictures), took a good 45 minutes.  No.  I do not want to live up north!
Zoe and I learned to crochet thanks to Grandmere!

With a winter storm looming and temps getting way low, we had a morning inside with everyone.  We split up into groups.  I grabbed some extra sugar and flour I had brought and mixed it with peanut butter to make playdough.  It was great fun, except that I forgot the twins were allergic to peanut butter and we were all stressing trying to make sure they didn’t grab any (Way to go Aunt Abbie)!

Another group played Monopoly with Papa!
Climbing on cousins is a treat!

Sometimes brothers are just way too comfy.

It’s easier to play a game if you stick your tongue out.
Quick Daddy has the camera…make a silly face.
Tic Tac Toe with Grandmere.
Best Cousin buds!

Just a few shots of the getting ready chaos.  There was always someone missing a glove, hat or boot at some point during this time.

Another day, we had the little ones inside and to keep them busy, I filled up a sink full of bubbles and they wen to town.  They did really good keeping it in the sink too!

Papa was watching the kids while we were getting supper ready!

“What is that thing in your mouth, dear cousin???”

The Great Outdoors

Since the biggest part of our trip was the snow.  I’ll post those first…

Another bunch of Characters!
Skiing…
 Grandmere and Zoe getting ready.

 G & H ready to learn from Uncle B.

 Liam enjoyed going fast.
O did an amazing job and enjoyed the beginner slope.

 It’s cold!!!

 This is how you stop.

All ready to go!
Sorry that I don’t have more pics of Zoe.  I was able to go out and watch her briefly one time, but didn’t get a lot of pictures.  Not sure why they didn’t make it here…there’s a lot of pictures though!

Are You Ready for This???

I apologize to my adoring fans, well, mostly family, about not my ever so sporadic blogging.  No we are not deathly ill, nor are we fighting, nor am I leaving Mark…we’re just living.  And blogging has had to take a back seat to life right now.

But, it’s all about to change…cuz, have I got some snow pictures to share…

So, let’s get to it, shall we?

Up above are pictures of the house we stayed in.  It was a two story round house.  How cool is that???  Those were taken after the first of two snowfalls…which dropped about six or so more inches on top of what was there when we got there.

Still after the first snow fall.  Know what we did with all that snow on that picnic table???  SNOW CREAM!  Oh yeah, and we added some fresh yummy strawberries in it too.  It was delicious if I do say so myself.

A view of the mountains on a trek to the ski resort.  This was after the large snowfall and the mountains were white because the trees were covered in snow.

Icicles on a resort building.  They were touching the ground!
 Beautiful!

Review: God Gave Us the World

God Gave Us the World

Take beautifully illustrated work and add words of truth from God’s Word and you get God Gave Us the World by Lisa Tawn Bergren and illustrated by Laura J. Bryant.

God Gave Us the World, follows Little Cub and Mama as they discuss why God made different bears and why God made everything and made it all so different.  Mama, with the wisdom from the Bible, always supplies Little Cub with the answers to her many questions.

We’ve enjoyed at least one other book from the “God Gave Us” series.  Our children truly enjoy the art and stories and we’ve read them time and again.  You just can’t go wrong with adorable cuddly polar bears.

It would be nice, though, to see Papa Bear, as one of the main characters.  In both of the books we have, Mama Bear seems to be the one with all the answers while Papa just smiles in the background.

We truly recommend God Gave Us the World.  Go here for more information about the author, Lisa Tawn Bergren.  You can also check it out on Facebook and at Multnomah Publishing.

God Gave Us the World can be purchased for $10.99 and can be purchased at Random House.
