Let ’em see ya read…

“The experts” all say that to encourage your children to read, they should see you reading. However, “the experts” don’t tell you that when you are trying to read, the children will clamour all around you with questions and comments about anything and everything. I pointed this out to Mark as I attempted to read a little in a Mitford book (which I have been trying to read for a month now and I’m now on chapter two!). As soon as they heard the gentle whirrrrr of the pages, they were on me like mosquitoes in the south!

Zoe smiled at me and asked, “Mom why do you read that book without talking.” Aha! There it is. Now, I know the reason they swarm when I open a book…they don’t realize I’m reading and they want me to read whatever it is out-loud to them!

Okay, “experts” you need to give a little more information when doling out advice!

Bargain Alert!

It’s tax free weekend in Georgia! Yippee! Besides that, I took Ace out in search of black shorts for ballet. They’re hard to find for a 3 year old.

Anyway, we headed over to KMart and apparently they have 40% off of their sales items. I got a shirt for me for $2.40 and another one for a little over $4. I found Ace a pair of shorts for next year (that he had to wear now) for $2.10! So, when we all went out to get ballet shoes and Zoe’s leotard, we headed back to KMart and I got a couple more $2 shirts for me and some more shorts for Ace for next year…it’s so hard to find Ace’s clothes at the consignment sale (his size clothes are either in bad shape or just simply not there).

So, if you live in Georgia, then head to get some clothes and try to find a KMart. I also heard that Target has clothes on sale, but I think I’ve met and surpassed my clothes budget for the month!

Best Husband in the World Goes to…

Well, Mark, of course. I got breakfast in bed (well, after my shower…he didn’t catch me fast enough). And then while we were out getting ballet equipment, he rushed me to a spa where I had a nice 30 minute massage! wooohoooo! I found out about the massage as he pulled into the parking lot. It was wonderful for my neck and aching bones. What a sweet blessing my husband is. I’m so grateful to God for giving me someone who loves and cares for me.

Stepping on Toes

Since I’ve read several blogs commenting on breastfeeding and World Breastfeeding Week, I thought I’d throw my 2 cents in. Yes, I do breastfeed my children. First off, it’s very convenient (no bottles to wash, measure and prepare while my baby screams. Secondly, the bonding time is wonderful (yes, I do enjoy some middle of the night feeds…the ones I can stay awake through). Thirdly, it’s economical and as a stay-at-home mom, I’m all about economical. Fourthly (and these are in no particular order), God has gifted women with this amazing ability to nurture our children from the beginning.

I’m all for new moms who want to breastfeed too. However, I have watched, supported, and cried for friends who have felt that they were horrible mothers because they couldn’t breastfeed. I say, they couldn’t, not because of lack of education or trying but because of lack of professional support and milk supply. I have seen several posts of moms who tried to breastfeed but had low supply. Those moms, who so desparately want to nourish their babies, have tried everything possible to feed them (herbs, supplements, etc.), but to no avail.

My heart ached for a friend who tried to nurse her first baby but ran into problems. She was crushed and felt so inadequate because everyone was throwing in her face, “Breast is best!” Here I was nursing my little one, and unable to comfort her or help her in nursing her baby. My sister had a very difficult time nursing her first one, but was able to pump for her for six months.

Some moms, especially new moms, haven’t got that go getter attitude about it either. When Ace was born, he weighed over 8 1/2 pounds and, by hospital policy, had to have his blood sugar level checked at birth and then an hour later. An hour later, they found that his levels “did not meet their standards” and the nurse promptly left the room and arrived again with a bottle, without even speaking to me. I asked her what she was doing. She informed me that his sugar levels were low and that she was going to give him a bottle. I quickly informed her that no, I would nurse him again. She got a little huffy and walked out of the room, making sure to leave the bottle out “in case she needed to use it.” After she returned, she checked his levels and they had gone up. And while she was away, Mark promptly tossed the bottle in the trash can. Had Ace been my first, I probably would not of said anything. However, having successfully breastfed one child on no bottles, I knew the standard and that in order for babies to get good latching techniques, etc, they needed to have only the breast for the first week or so. Oh, and we also learned by way of our pediatrician that his “low” levels were not low and acceptable and did not show the need for a bottle.

I can see a lot of pressure on moms to breastfeed and it breaks my heart. While I do believe that breastfeeding is the best choice for a baby, I have come to this philosophy with friends. If you can do it, great! If something happens and you are stressed and it’s getting harder to do then don’t. Your health (physically and emotionally) directly effects your sweet child and if you are upset, then the baby will be upset…it’s not worth it to have both of you upset.

Sorry if I stepped on toes…just my opinions and observations.

Drop Back and Punt

I’m not sure 100% what this means, but for me it means I need to drop back and reset how we do things. Having a new little one means adjustments…and those adjustments mainly apply to Liam.

Today while attempting to get Josiah down for a nap, Liam decided to climb in the kitchen sink (Zoe and Ace had just finished washing dishes and left Liam and the chairs by the sink). He then proceeded to turn the water on while pointing the faucet to the countertop which then proceeded to flood the kitchen!

Before this, as I was attempting to get ready for the day, Liam decided he should climb in our co-sleeper and into Josiah’s Snugglenest sleeper while Josiah was in it. So, what should have been about 5 minutes of getting ready resulted in 20 minutes as I would do one thing and then go get Liam and then another and go get Liam.

After cleaning up the kitchen, I once again attempted to get Josiah down for a nap. At which point, Liam decided he should get in the utility room and open the laundry detergent. I’m still not sure if he ingested any but I do know that it was all over his arm and he kept making gagging noises after I cleaned him up. I gave him some milk and it seemed to help. I also called Mark and he thought the milk should do the trick. We left it at I would just watch to see if he truly had any poisioning from it. Not to worry, no residual effects from it!

So, after the above incident, I’ve changed my strategy with the above “wild child.” I’m going to start keeping him in the same room with me at all times. Trying, yes, but a great need since he can’t be trusted to not clobber himself while I step out to tend to Josiah. I tried this shortly afterwards, as I was nursing Josiah and it seemed to work well. Hopefully, I can get him to obey long enough to sit with me while I nurse Josiah each time. That’s the main time consuming out of pocket time. At other times, I believe I’ll just have to “wear” Josiah until his little body gets ready to regulate into nap times and Liam can be left to play in the playroom, etc.

Things heard and done in my house this week

“Somebody poured water on my pants.” A sweet little guest who had an “accident” during Ace’s party…I still get cracked up at that.
“Oh wow! I’m just saying Wow!” Ace opening up gifts on his actual birthday last Thursday.
“Ohhhh, I can hardly stand it.” Zoe as Ace is opening the card she made him. She drew a picture of him in his prince costume.

I decided since I’m up to having to put sheets on four beds, it was time for Zoe to learn how to make her bed. My every intention was to hoard over her while she tried to make the bed. However, her attitude as I tried to instruct her how to put a pillowcase one (while Josiah fussed and I fussed over making the boys’ bed), required her to have time to herself in her room. As I finished with the boys bed and nursed Josiah, I looked in Zoe’s room…she had it almost all made. Definitely can’t micromanage my little independent. She did a good job too. The sheets are a little crumpled but they’re on the bed and they’ll be plenty of time for instruction in my obsessive compulsive bed making.

Caught Up!

I think I’ve caught up with all my posts now.

Now to catch up on everything else. I have card orders and then school is coming up in two weeks. I’ve got that pretty well ready (did that back in May) but I need Mark to do some reconfiguring in the playroom so that we can put up posters and have toys put up and out of the way when school starts.

Zoe’s ready to go now but I told her mama wasn’t and that we need to wait a few weeks. I also want our school to stay close with the county calendar so that she’ll be out when her friends are . After school starts, we have a week until ballet starts!

Ace & Zoe are “promoting” in church stuff as well. Ace will be in 3 year old cubbies and Zoe will be in 4 year old cubbies. Zoe will also be moving “upstairs” for all her other activities and this will be Ace’s first year in choir. My babies are growing up!!!

Josiah’s Firsts

Well, Saturday completed Josiah’s first month. He’s had a lot of first this month…including, being sat on by big brother Liam, getting to see all his grandparents, christening a church pew with (well you know), and smiling!

Yep, this past week, Josiah has graced us with a few “social” smiles. One of which went to Papa. He smiled at me on Saturday and then I passed him off to Mark and he started smiling at him. Such a sweet smile.

We also headed to the doctor today and he’s now on zantac for the reflux. He was just getting so fussy and acted like he was in a lot of pain. A friend also suggested I cut out dairy. While cutting it out isn’t an exact possibilty, I can cut back on it and I am going to try that, too to see how he reacts with it.

Just pondering life with Ge!

Taking a snooze with Granddaddy. I can’t believe I got a picture of my dad smiling so big…but he does that with babies. He had a blast with a friend’s baby during Ace’s party.

All of Ace’s Birthday Celebrations

So, on Thursday, Grandmere got up and took Ace to breakfast. A nice treat for him! We then packed up and headed to the free movies that our theater offers during the summer. We met up with some MOPS moms and enjoyed a movie and then headed to ice cream…for lunch. After that, we went home and ate crackers and chicken salad and then went to nap time. Did I remember the camera? Nah!

When Mark got home we ate supper and then feasted on cake ice cream and a surprise store cake from Mark. Then Ace opened his presents from us, Grandmere and Papa , and his Aunt & Uncle from Mark’s side.

Woohoo! An Alabama jersey.

For those that wanted to know what we got Ace….it was a basketball goal! And he and Zoe and Liam loved it.

Saturday was the day of Ace’s party. We were supposed to go to a local park complete with two playgrounds and a nice water fountain to play in. Unfortunately, the morning dawned with clouds and then rain! Yuk! So, we changed locations to our house. The prince party was celebrated as at least 13 kids ran to and fro in our home. Loads of fun.

Ace loves babies and one of his friends’ little brothers came along to the party!

Yo ho a pirate’s life for me!
