Baby Peanut is…

a boy!!! Josiah Britt let us know right away that he was on the way. He is healthy and growing good. He measured about 20 weeks give or take a week. He was asleep even after drinking caffeine but the tech was able to wake him up. We are praising God that He has chosen us to raise not one, or two, but three little boys for His glory! We are a little overwhelmed that we will have three boys but any amount of children no matter what gender is a great responsiblity as well as a gift. So, Zoe will get to be the little princess for a while longer until God chooses to bless us with a little girl through adoption (we pray).

Here’s his little boy part picture to verify for everyone. We definitely didn’t see any of the “lines’ that are typical of a girl on the ultrasound.

Sweet little Josiah just a snoozing.
His pretty little foot.

Most everyone knows that Zoe was praying for a baby sister. I was worried about her reaction but she was just thrilled to be able to see the baby on the screen. She was wide eyed and grinning the whole time. She is thrilled about being able to swap rooms now (look for an invite to our painting party soon!). She was also thrilled to be able to see such a sweet miracle. She loved looking at his feet and hands. Here are a few of her comments:
“He’s so pretty!”
“I can’t believe he’s so small.”
“Can I see his feet again!?”

Thank you for praying that he was healthy. He is a true blessing from God. Please continue to pray for a continued healthy pregnancy and delivery!

Oh yeah, Josiah’s name:
Josiah was a king. His name means “God will save” or “”fire of the Lord.” You can read about him in 2 Kings 21 through23. Here is a little of what the Bible says about him:

Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left. 2 Kings 22:1-2

Britt is my maiden name and a way for us to carry on the Britt name.

Sick Kids Update

Everyone is well! Except for runny noses from me (Abbie), Liam, Ace, and Zoe…but we are on the healing side of things and we should be all better in a few days. I’m so excited that we can just go to church tonight!!!

I’ll post tomorrow about Baby Peanut! Please pray that the baby is healthy and that we are able to see whether the baby is a boy or girl!

Feelings

This morning is the first time I’ve felt Baby Peanut move with my hand! He/she just had a party when we woke up, so I laid in bed and enjoyed the (for now) soft kicking. Very sweet! He/she is really low down but I did feel a few jabs high up. This baby is kicking on the left side whereas the other ones kicked me on the right…very different.

One more week until we have our ultrasound! Have you made a guess as to what the baby is?????

Phew…we made it!

Pictures are all done. He wound up taking the storm windows off and climbing up on a ladder to peer in through it and take pictures. It’ll be interesting to see the result. And I have to say, I have the cleanest set of plastic dishes anywhere! Zoe and Ace were great. I think they had fun and I added to the fun by promising they could have ice cream after supper! Normally, I’m not a big fan of bribes, but when they are doing something so out of the ordinary a treat is in order…especially when we have a sick one.

By the way, Ibuprofren is my friend when I need a hyper, happy sick Zoe!

The Bug Revisited…

I thought we were over it and headed for just plain colds with Zoe and Ace…Zoe woke up with a fever this morning! Yuk! Ace has started the coughing and will be in fever mode in a few days as well, I at least, am anticipating. I wish they would all get it at the same time. But alas! Life is not catered to my wishes.

On the flip side, Mark and I got the main part of the house cleaned…the kitchen…and I’ll be dosing Zoe before picture time to help with her fever. She may not feel like pictures and that will be fine, but I know she would love to have her picture in the paper.

Agggghhhhh!!!

Okay, well a couple of months ago, a reporter for one of our parent magazines here came by a MOPS meeting and did an article on our MOPS group! She was a great reporter and so sweet and expecting her third little one with a grade schooler and toddler already. She called a couple of weeks ago and asked if I or if I knew of anyone that could give her some information on kitchen organization. She wanted input from a mom with little ones running around. So, I just talked to her about how we ran our kitchen and cleaned, etc. I had just cleaned out/reorganized my cabinets so we talked about that. I also talked to her about how I work with the kids and get them to pitch in and help. We talked about their chores, etc. Then I left her with two names of people who I thought she would like to talk with (one is a MOPS mom of 10 with one on the way). I don’t think she contacted my friends but she called today to give me a head’s up that a reporter was coming out from Augusta Family Magazine to take pictures of me in my kitchen with my kids…do you know what that means??!!! I HAVE TO CLEAN MY HOUSE!!! That would not be a big deal and ordinarily it would be presentable clean but with me being sick last week and dealing with Liam and Zoe being sick, I haven’t done a lick of cleaning…yucky house. I have until one tomorrow afternoon to get the house, especially the kitchen clean as a whistle! Wish me luck. I’ll post the article as soon as it comes out (in March, I think).

Ace-ology…through the eyes of the child!

For the kids weekly memory verses, we’ve been using her Awana verses. They’ve worked for us. On non-Awana weeks we work with verses from an extra credit Awana book called Character Builders. We mainly focus on Zoe learning the verses, but Ace is able to learn them as well so we are also working with him. We’ve found the best time to say our verses is around the table during mealtime. This assures a good three times a day saying verses and Zoe can usually memorize a verse in about three days due to this repitition. Okay, so on to the funny…

This week’s verse is John 14:2: In my Father’s house, are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you. I’m going up there now to prepare a place for you.

So, Ace is reciting the verse, “In my Fader’s house, are many rooms…it’s a big big place”

I had to crack a grin! So cute and so true! It’s a big, big place with room for all of us if we just ask Jesus into our hearts 🙂

Actually, I think he is combining two songs that we enjoy (one they just heard this week), Rich Mullins’ “That where I am…” and Audio Adrenaline’s “Big House!”

The Bug

It started with me this time. I got bad sick on Friday. Achy, sore throat, headache, congestion, then a fever in the afternoon. By Saturday, I was a little better and Mark started feeling bad. He can take Motrin, so he stayed medicated on Saturdy and Sunday. Saturday night, Liam started with a nasty cough and I announced he was not going to church…I just knew he had it. Sure enough, Sunday late morning, he started running a fever…and he’s still running a fever. Zoe woke up yesterday morning about 5:30 with the nasty cough. Her temp is staying down for now. I’m anticipating it going up before the afternoon which will mean no speech, no ballet, etc. for the week. We’ll see.

So far, Ace is the most healthy and has had no problems with being sick. I’m much, much better. My throat is barely hurting. Mark is getting better. His voice has gotten a little rough with it. I asked him last night how long he’d been smoking!

Stay tuned to our sickly tale!

Addition Update

Okay, word from Mark is that Mr. Bill is going to pass on the line item estimate to me tonight at Bible Study (the men’s and women’s Bible study is at the same time). He’s also talking to a friend to see if he can come up with a cheaper estimate. Mark is at the realization that it’s going to cost a little more than he anticipated…but still be worth it (at least not to hear me get frustrated because I can’t find my clothes in my pile). The main cost is coming from all the stuff that actually has to go in the room…the bathtub/shower, vanity, toilet…things you really can’t live without in a bathroom.

So, Mark and I will review the estimate, see where we will be able to pitch in to cut the costs down and then go from there. More later…

Laundry Detergent

WARNING: This may be boring to those who care nothing about homemaking or saving money. So just skip this if the above warning pertains to you. But, if you are curious about what exactly it means to make your own laundry detergent and how crazy we are…read on!

Okay, now that that is out of the way…I haven’t made any laundry detergent in about six months. Right when I ran out, I was going to make some more, but then I got pregnant and the first trimester was a blur of nausea and exhaustion and taking care of my little Characters. So, I’ve just been using the detergent I purchase for diapers as my clothing detergent. Note: I can’t use my homemade detergent for diapers because the Borax will mess up the diapers, supposedly.

Finally, today on our weekly trip to Wal-Mart I went in search for an appropriate container for laundry detergent. Previously, I used a 13 gallon trash can. The largest batch of laundry detergent I’ve ever made is 6 gallons. Plus the trash can didn’t have a secure lid (it was a flip lid) so “stuff” kept getting into it which I thought was really gross. On my last sweep in the container/organizer aisle, I spotted a trash can that was 24 quarts (aka 6 gallons). Eureka! Not only that, it also had a locking lid to keep yucky stuff out. I was super excited (okay probably way too excited as any one person should be over an inanimate household product).

We made up our laundry detergent tonight. It smells so yummy! We used Dove soap this time. Previously, we’ve used Ivory Soap. I hope the smell sticks around with this one. The Ivory smell didn’t stay long.

Here is the recipe for our laundry detergent:
18 c water
1 bar soap, grated (Fels Naptha is a laundry soap but any bar soap would work)
1 1/2 c Washing Soda
1 1/2 c Borax
24 quart bucket (6 gallons)
12 c hot water
hot water

Mix soap in a suacepan with 18 cups of water, and heat on low until dissolved. Stir in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until thickened, and remove from heat. Add 12 cups hot water to bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket with hot water and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours, or until thickened. Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load.

Soaps Goen Buy is the only place I’ve found that carries Washing Soda. Some grocery stores are rumored to have it but we don’t have grocery stores here that carry it.

Real quick and then I’ll show pics of our laundry process. I found out that homemade laundry detergent could be made a little over a year ago from a friend who knew someone who used to make their own. Curiousity got the best of me, and I googled it! I found the recipe above at The Frugal Shopper along with several other recipes. Mark, being such a great husband, agreed to embark on this new adventure. We tried it…it worked…the end. My brother in law actually figured out how much money the detergent cost per load. It was somewhere around .02 cents per load, I believe. Not bad!

Here are the pics from our laundry detergent adventure.

Getting a little help from Liam as we grate soap!

Zoe was fine tuning her grating skills.

Still grating…this is the most time consuming part of the process.

Grated soap…finally! Looks kind of like powdered sugar or snow in the picture.

Zoe stirring the soap and water until it dissolves.

Mark filling up the bucket before we added the soap, borax, washing soda concotion.

My new and cool laundry bucket! I printed off the recipe on sticker paper and then attached it to the bucket as well as covering that with contact paper. A lot easier than searching for my recipe each time.

This is what the detergent looks like when it’s first made. Very watery. It’ll gel up into a goopy substance after about 24 hours and then it’ll be ready to use. One thing about homemade detergent is that it doesn’t suds like store bought kind…but that’s okay. Our clothes are still getting clean!
