Happy 1st Birthday Ceili Rain!

Yep, I realize that she has been one for over a month now.  Yep, there are a ton of pictures on this post.  Yep, there are two little girls who look the same age celebrating a birthday.  It’s one of my best friend’s daughters…this is the one you’ve seen throughout the blog and we both have told them that they are BFF’s so not to fight it…since they are four days apart and we’re not sure where we’ll be if/when they move back here (they are being transferred out to another state…army)…we decided to be cheesy and celebrate their birthdays together.
So, less talk…more pictures:

She’s not sucking on her thumb…I think she’s chewing on her fingers here.

Meg Meg had a fever this day so the thrill was not so much there as it usually is.

We got “the girls” these little crawling dolls that Ceili Rain has enjoyed watching, in store, for quite some time.  They crawl and make baby noises…and, in the store, they don’t have an off button that can be reached.  Yeah, I walked through Wal-Mart with two plastic babies googoo and gagaing in my shopping cart.  I am not ashamed.

Bags are as much fun as boxes.

Cake Time…and a rush to get it out before Megan just completely lost it.  You can tell Ceili Rain’s just anticipating somethin’ good.
I made the cakes.  From scratch.  First time to do that.  It was a yellow cake with strawberry filling (first time to do a filling) and cream cheese icing.  And yes, it was very tasty.  I can not find my yellow cake recipe but I know there’s a link at this place…somewhere.  And the strawberry filling is so easy you’d freak out…it is from a search on Recipezaar.  The decorations are a la a quick JoAnn’s search and edible images (not that healthy but just too cute).
Our little “twins”
I made cupcakes with the same yellow cake batter and then put a little dab of the strawberry filling in each (baked).  Then topped some with cream cheese icing and some with chocolate icing.  I think we all enjoyed that.
Megan’s big brother James enjoying some cupcakes with his daddy!

Still going at it!

Sugar overload???

Time to get cleaned up!

Sick Megan all clean and ready to rest!

Much cleaner!

Uncle Kevin reading to the boys…

And putting one little tired  Super Wy to sleep.  Yes, that is Liam picking his nose.  I’m so proud.

And in case you’re wondering about Ceili Rain’s tongue sticking out…

It runs in the family.

Curls??? Seriously???

So, I’ve been pregnant, well at the end of this pregnancy, a total of 56 months (counting our miscarriage).  And never have I gotten what I have now.

Look closely, my dear friends and you will not see the straight fluffy thick hair that has once graced my head…nope…it’s been exchanged for some curls and LOTS of waves!  And none of that has been chemically altered (okay, the color has but not the waves and curls).

Yep, you can say I’m pretty pumped to be sporting my new lively volume lifting do.  See, I have a sister who has the funnest spiralest springy curls…and she and her husband passed those on to my beautiful niece and nephew as well.  I’ve always envied her cute set of  curls.

When I was in seventh grade and she was in ninth, we went to have our hair permed (the thing to do in the late eightie/early nineties).  I had visions of sweet spirals abounding from my head.  But alas, all I got was a little bit of wave that fell out.  Not too far after that, my Nana, got another perm for me (having been her who allowed me/paid for my first perm).  Again, not much result except a little bit of burnt hair that had to be cut shoulder length and turned out to be a nice do for me.  But my sister, with her delicate fine hair…had curls abounding and, at that time, the “big hair” that every girl tried to achieve with as much Aqua Net as they could talk their mother into purchasing.  While walking into the bathroom when she was fixing her hair might have required a chemical mask…it was still pretty cool that she had the “in” hair…while I dealt with the dull straight hair.

Do you need a tissue for my sad tale???  I hold no grudges against my sibling and love her hair…she still gets those bouncy curls, although she straightens them more often than not now (or did last time I saw)…but she has options to what she can do with her hair.  My options were…pull up, put down, and occasionally, flip out, flip under.

But now, dear readers who can’t believe I’ve written this much on the thickness of my head hair, now, I’m in the game…I’ve got options too!  Or I will, if I can figure out how to style/tame this mop on my head!  I noticed spirals popping up near my ears a few weeks ago…and then noticed that there was no way I could get my hair to just dry straight.  And when I didn’t put anything at all on my hair, well, that led to a bigger than life eighties hair do that is not in style right now.  So…trusty Facebook to the rescue, I left a comment on my status that I needed advice on curl boosting products and several friends gave me tips on what to try with my hair.  I honestly didn’t think any curl boosting products would work.

But they did!
And while there is a fine line between wavy and out of control to some bouncy curls and lots of wave…I’m getting the hang of this new do and hope it sticks around after Mr. Bryant makes his debut!
And to prove that my hair is was straight and really thick…here’s a picture from February:
So the poof and wave were starting but not quite there yet!
The only thing I’m worried about is that my mom said she got wavy/curly hair when she was pregnant with me.  Is that a sign of things to come with dear Bryant?  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Babymoon and Food…

Mark and I indulged the two and half days were gone…and it all started with the box of Godiva choocolates and sparkling cider that we had as part of our babymoon package.  Mmmm!

Sunday night, we used our gift certificate to Mercato’s.  A short walk and we arrived at a beautifully decorated Italian restaurant.  The food was pretty good and the prices were great (since we didn’t have to pay for our meal).  As a salad, I got a Caprese Salad.  I wasn’t sure what that was but was interested in trying the house made mozzarella…which turned out not to have too much flavor to it at all.

But the lasagna was yummy!  See???
Because we had a gift certificate, Mark bought the most expensive thing on the menu…and he loved it as well…the face says it all (I caught him mid chew).  We had even more money left over on our certificate, so Mark ordered tiramasu (which tasted like coffee and I promptly spit out) to take back to the hotel.
But we did stop at the candy shop next door so I could get a bear claw (yep…I am brave enough to show a picture of me propping up the candy on Bryant).
Saturday, we grabbed a quick bite before heading to the spa for my manicure and pedicure (trust me…Mark did not want to nor did he participate in any spa experience…his manhood is secure).  We had been perusing Market Street and so ran into a neat little pizzeria called Di Giovanni’s.  For eight bucks, we both got a pizza “the size of your head!”  And were treated to real old-fashioned New York (or New Jersey…not sure which) accents and attitudes!  Really, the owner was very gracious and super friendly.  And the pizza was extremely yummy…especially for the price!
Upon a recommendation from a friend, we opted for Poogan’s Porch for supper.  It was within walking distance from our hotel and sounded super yummy.  We ate on the back porch because the weather was unbelievable and the smell on the front porch was hideous.  Another couple was out there and they had eaten there many times and told us what was yummy and how much they loved to eat there.  The food was super fast in coming out and really good…and the biscuits were AWESOME (See my half eaten biscuit above for proof).  Oh, and the restaurant was named Poogan’s Porch after a dog…I guess he hung out on the porch a lot.
You can’t go to Charleston without getting Shrimp & Grits…Mark really enjoyed it too!  I passed on the seafood and got…
the buttermilk chicken which was Yuuuu-mmmmy!
And lastly…I’ve now decided a stop in Charleston (or Columbia for that matter) will never be complete without getting one of these
from Cupcake.  Let me just say that they were extremely delicious and this place is centrally located for some serious people watching! (Isn’t it cute how our cupcakes “match” but aren’t the same…kinda like us…awwww).
Are you hungry yet???

Fourteen Years Ago…

Fourteen years ago today, I was nervously looking out my front door awaiting my prom date…which happened to be my first date with Mark. I feel like it was yesterday (and a few kids ago) when I saw him walking up to my door in his tux and with a dozen flowers.  I was so nervous and when I saw him I got even more nervous.  He was unbelievably handsome.  I had wanted to date him for several months but he thought I was weird until about a month before prom.  I think it was mostly because I stopped pursuing him and allowed him to pursue me…if he wanted.  I was not sure what to expect out of a date I had waited for for so long.

Anyway, I knew after that night, that I would marry him.  He was a wonderful gentleman.  Not many juniors in high school would want to go on a first date to a prom AND with all of her crazy friends to eat.  He managed though and now…it’s been fourteen years since our first date.

I love him more every day! (I would put a picture of our first date up here but have no clue where the pictures are…ugh).

Our First Babymoon

This year marks 10 years that Mark and I have been married.  (Okay, I was going to put 10 years that he’s put up with me in the same house under the same roof…but it’s more romantic to say it the other way).  Given that on our actual anniversary I’m going to be right smack in the middle of third trimester uncomfortableness (and that is a word), we decided to plan a trip a little ahead of our anniversary.

We threw around different places to go all the way from the Grand Canyon to New York City.  And then, one day, I realized, we’d both never been to Charleston which is practically in our backyard (okay about three hours from our backyard but that’s pretty close compared to where we were looking).  We started looking at places to stay in Charleston and crept upon a pretty little inn with a sweet romance package…called a Babymoon Package.  It was a great deal on a room which included a spa gift certificate and a gift certificate to a restaurant.  We were pysched!  After arranging childcare we made reservations and set the date.

And it happened this month!  We had a wonderful time and this was the first time, since having children, we’ve taken a trip and not had to do anything!  So, the next few days, get ready to visit Charleston with us (briefly, you really have to go to get the full experience).

We stayed at the Andrew Pinckney Inn.  This is the main building and the rest of the hotel is across the street.  The room was beautiful.  A bit small…and my only other complaint (besides getting a call from what I can only imagine was the front desk, the first night at 3 in the morning), was that we were put on a streetside room.  Not too big a deal.  The noise outside died down about the time we headed to bed.  However, the street sweepers came by both nights twice around 5 in the morning.  Not ideal for a couple who is on their Babymoon trip.  So, if you are pregnant and want to get in on this deal, request an inside room!  Oh, and don’t drink the beverages served at breakfast.  Something with those machines makes them all taste like metal or rotten or something….but the breakfast was good and served it’s purpose for our ventures out that day!

The best thing about where we stayed was that we were about two blocks from Market Street where all the tourists go to experience Charleston.  We were also within walking distance to a ton of restaurants.  We pretty much kept the car (or truck…we had to borrow Mark’s dad’s truck…long story) parked except for two outings.

Mark took a picture of a front door.  Well, it’s two front doors on one house.  We took a carriage ride (highly recommended to learn more about Charleston and to look at the beautiful houses) and our guide told us why most of the houses have these doors to the porch.  They’re called “hospitality” doors.  If they are open, it means the homeowners are open to receiving guests.  Closed means “get lost.”  Either way, we thought they were unusual and beautiful.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church that they started building in the 1800s and finished just this year!  The reason being that they just added the beautiful metalwork steeple to it this year.  This is just one example of the beautiful eccentric buildings that can be seen all around Charleston.

One day, we ate our breakfast (at the inn) on top of the “roof.”  Which is really a little terrace balcony on the top floor.  It was beautiful and romantic.  This is a view from the breakfast area (and also the only shot of both of us together).  I was hoping she would be able to get the church in the shot…we were at the corner of Church St. and Pinckney St. and there was a beautiful huge steeple that could be seen from the terrace area.

Decorating…

I’ve mentioned that we have been trying to get more verses up on the walls around our home.   So…I got another one up:

This is part of the verse from Psalm 127.  It’s The Message version which says Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?(vs 3).  And yes, we’ll adjust it so that Bryant can be included.  I designed the verse in Uppercase Living’s MyDesign Suite.  Let me say, this was not one of my cheaper verse projects, but I thought it would work best to use the vinyl lettering so that I could get the right size.  Mark cut a piece of wood to the size that we needed for the verse.

Speaking of Bryant…I’ve added his name to the boys’ room door…but with an updated look.  There were wooden letters on their door, but Bryant’s name would not have fit.  They were bulky wooden letters.  So, Uppercase Living (and Mark’s handy wood work) to the rescue!

Yes, I’m fully aware that the train has nothing to do with flying or the sort…but I was outvoted that Josiah would much prefer a train as opposed to plane…and everyone was right!

This next project (as with the names on the door) was not a necessity but something I was able to do cheaply and cutley (again with Uppercase Living’s MyDesign Suite).  We have three bathrooms in our house:  our mater bathroom, the “girls” bathroom, and the “boys” bathroom.

On the girls’ bathroom.  The thing with their bathroom is that it’s also the guest bathroom…so I guess I’ll have to add to that at some point.

Bonus points if you can tell me why there is a number 13 on the helmet 🙂  Here’s a hint:  the boys’ bathroom decor is all done in University of Alabama….any guesses???

The great thing about the bathroom doors is that I can add to or change if needed…and the ones on the boys’ door and above the pictures I can take down and carry with us should God send us somewhere else other than this house…and those are the ones I’d want to take with us.  I am going to get the girls’ room done…just haven’t ordered their names yet.

Easter Celebrations

I know I”m a week or so late on this…but I’m getting there.  We had a quiet Resurrection Sunday morning.  The afternoon and evening were full.  But we did go to church (with two children under the influence of medicine used to reduce fevers).  And afterwards, while I packed, Mark took pictures:

Ceili Rain did have a bonnet but it was no where to be found (hence the reason she has her hair in her face).

I made the girls’ dresses using the Girls’ 1914 Dress Pattern from Sense & Sensibility Patterns.  It wasn’t extremely easy but the results were wonderful!  I thought they both looked adorable.  Now, I will say that Ceili rain’s dress was a bit snug (which it wasn’t last month when I finished it).  Any little girls that need a cute pink dress let me know!

Ahhh…the missing bonnet.
The end of the sisters photo shoot!
It was at this point that Josiah’s medicine kicked in and Liam’s wore off.  He spent the entire photo op in the van.

On the Hunt…

With all the hustle and bustle and indecision on our part about whether to pack up five kids (two of which were sick, remember???), we did manage to squeeze in a few of our Spring/Easter traditions.

One of which was the kids receiving their spring baskets (and not from a mutant rabbit with a bow around his neck) on Saturday.  Not sure if I’ve mentioned this (but I probably have for the past three years) but we give them baskets full of about three things on Saturday instead of Sunday.  It’s easier than wrestling chocolate away from them…they have plenty of time to play with/watch/remember what Resurrection Sunday is about…Resurrection Sunday is reserved for the actual celebration of Christ’s resurrection not chocolate and food (oh, and traveling six hours away to watch a shuttle launch).

Another tradition is dying eggs and adding those to our Resurrection eggs and hunt them.

At the time, Liam was drugged with acetemetophin so he was good to go.

Josiah was not on the other hand.
Ceili Rain enjoyed the swing.

Sea Turtles

Still in Jekyll…we got up on Tuesday morning and after eating, we headed out to the Sea Turtle Center.  Every one seemed to be perky and fever free this day and it was time to celebrate and educate.

Zoe’s not quite as tall as the tallest known living turtle. (And these are turtles not tortoises…ask the kids.  They know the difference).

The center is basically a rescue/recovery/education facility.  They have a turtle hospital and have vets/marine biologists etc., that do research and care for the sick turtles that are brought to them all over the east coast.  This turtle’s getting a spa treatment by having his shell scraped to fight off infection from the keratin (I think that’s right) that builds up on his back.  He seemed to be enjoying it.

You can’t tell…but this was a big sea turtle.  Most of the turtles at the center are not there because of human related accidents/ issues.  The ones we saw most of were cold-stunned…where a sudden drop in the temperature in the ocean forced them to be stagnate (since they’re cold blooded animals) and wreaked havoc on their body systems.  Just another issue to deal with in global warming.  I’m kidding.
Peeking up to say hello!
And as we were leaving…what did the kids want to look at in the gift shop???  Yep, books!  I love our little book nerds!

CeiRai-isms

She’s a bit quirky…

(umm, that’s how she drank from her cup on the trip to Florida)
…and a tad bit apprehensive about much of anything.  She’s the first to actually not like being thrown in the air.
Oh, and sometimes…when you’re in a hotel room with five kids…she’s the one…
That has to sacrifice a bed*…
But she’s okay with that!
*No, we did not make her sleep in the nightstand console.  She just kept crawling up into it.  And when I told her to go nite nite, she cuddled with her giraffe and laid her head down (but she didn’t really go to sleep).
