Going Backstage…with the Bible (VBS)

Our vacation Bible school was last week, and while it was thoroughly exhausting, we had a BLAST!

The theme was “Backstage with the Bible” and it was from the group Go Fish! This was one VBS that was grounded in God’s Word and encouraging the children to not only come but to bring their Bibles and actually (gasp) open them up and read them (at least those that could read). Also, the gathering/worship time was one of the best we’ve been to. The kids and adults were not standing around singing really silly (read lame) songs…they were worshipful and focused on the true reason we are here…to praise and glorify God.

And so, to start this week off, I’ll be posting several days worth of pictures and video from this week and mainly from their rockin’ concert on Saturday!

Ceili Rain’s Three Months

Ceili Rain has finished up her third month strong. She is by far the most talkative baby we have had. She loves to googoo gaga to us. She loves to be worn but can be just as content to ride in the stroller. She does get fed up with the car seat (did you see what we did last weekend!). It feels like she’s been a part of our family for a long time. She’s just slid right into her place and is here and happy to go along. She also loves Celtic/Irish music which is quite sweet since her name is Irish!

I took these pictures at Ge & Granddaddy’s house.

How could you not love this sweet Irish Rose!

A Couple of Lines

My 8 year old nephew was talking with Ace this past weekend about their parents’ names. Ace asked E if he knew what my name was.

“Yes, it’s Aunt Sister.”

“No it’s not.” Ace told him.

“I know what her real name is but I call her Aunt Sister!”

Liam was sitting in Bible study time with Mrs. S. at VBS tonight. She was talking to them about what sin was. She mentioned how sometimes they hit their sister.

“Not me” Liam piped up.

Or their brother…

“Not me,” Liam said.

Or say mean things…

“My mommy does that,” Liam announced.

Sometimes the truth hurts…the funny thing is, I wasn’t ugly today nor did I yell even once…yesterday, different story but today, almost as good as gold!

First Birthday Celebration

This past weekend we traveled to my parent’s house to celebrate Ge’s birthday and cousin J’s birthday. So it breaks down like this…Friday I went to the dentist, loaded up the van, dropped off Ace’s friend who spent the night (I forgot pictures. Sorry Lisa!), headed to Ge & Granddaddy’s. Got there without incident, headed out that evening to meet cousin J and family to celebrate her birthday. On Saturday we got up and went to Market Day in their town. Feigned that the children were going looney and needed to head out where they wouldn’t break anything. Headed to the “toy store” but actually to get pictures for Ge’s birthday (those are coming…soon). Sugared them up after pictures ate lunch and back to Ge’s house to celebrate her birthday. Left there that evening and headed to an auction (Ge & Granddaddy’s favorite past time). Got up on Sunday and headed home. Decided, last minute, to unpack quickly and go to the pool to wear the kids out. To the pool, home, made supper for a family at our church for Monday and crashed!!

So. Here’s pictures from the weekend.

Bubbles! A great gift from Ge (so alliterate).

Waiting on Granddaddy to help with the bubbles.
Snuggles and cuddles with Ge.

Josiah was nicely entertained by Uncle J…thanks! He loved your silly faces.

I love my cousin J!

Poor cousin E was getting attacked by Josiah. Whilst, Zoe and Cousin J acted out a ballet…this was at the auction and we were trying to find ways to entertain them.

Go Fish!

They’re coming to our area on Saturday! So, if you live near us, then you need to get your tickets for the concert!

If you don’t know who Go Fish is, then you haven’t been reading my blog long. They are awesome. My kids love their music and so do we. Not only do their songs re-enforce what we are teaching our kids but they are also fun to listen to. Well, Party Like a Preschooler really just teaches them how to act silly…but “Everybody do the crazy dance!”

Check them out here. Then let me know if you’ll be in the area and I’ll tell ya where to get tickets! It’s only $5 a person so it’s waaaaayyyyy cheaper than going to see Thomas or The Wiggles!

The Moment Ya’ll Have Been Waiting For…

Swim Lessons!! The kids finished up today and this is one glad mama that we don’t have to get up and spend our whole morning at the pool! We will probably go at least once next week though, because they have a blast!

Zoe is doing great learning to swim on her own. She’s still very hesitant about swimming on her back.

Goggle Boys! They found the goggles this week and since one was broken, we purchased some more (how many times did I want to write google instead of goggle…the internet, shish!)

Zoe graduated!

I wore Ceili Rain for two days…pretty much the whole day. While I love to wear her, I have to admit that was a lot and very draining. So, we pulled out our single stroller and tried her in that. This is what she did for most of the swim lessons.

Ace after the teacher dunked him under. I love the face!

Liam liked to venture out on his own a little. He still obeyed the teachers and stayed close to them and to the side. He’s become an expert “digger.”

Hallelujah! It’s Working…I think.

So, most of you are figuring out that I’m a big fan of this lady’s blog. I have no clue who she is…Mark knows this and points it out to me. I do know she has a mirror on my life and I can totally relate to her zany stories of her family! I got an idea from her to do Sit Time with the kids and we’ve been working on it on and off for a while.

So, today, it paid off. We had to run into the post office and instead of using the nifty Automated system, I had to go and talk to an actual person to send something media mail. THat meant a lot of things to touch and talk about and break. We got into the post office area and I found a spot where I could see a majority of the kids. Pointing I declared “Sit time.” Zoe, Ace, and Liam all plopped down in the direction I pointed! Granted, Liam did scoot under the table but they sat and were quiet. I have to say for the whole five minutes I was in there, my supreme parenting skills impressed, oh, two people. I just smiled and laughed at their wonderful comments, knowing that the day had just begun.

After swim lessons, which I have a post but not pictures ready so be patient they’re coming, we headed to the best fast food family restaurant known to man…Chick-fil-a. I love this place because they are soooo friendly and take care of their “guests (meaning mama’s with lots of littles under foot).” Everytime the kids go to the dentist they receive a coupon for a free kids meal. So we cashed those in today. As I was trying to order I hear this unruly kid trying to leg drop the more than life sized cut out of a cow. The cashier glances over at this kid with no discipline and then back at me as I try to finish my order. After a couple of more glances, I turn to see why this kid’s mama isn’t disciplining him…oh, wait, it was because this kid’s mama was ordering food and it was me! The unruly culprit…Liam. The cashier was so kind as he told me to have a seat and they’d bring the food out. See…nice as can be…and also not wanting their cow cut outs to be destroyed by a three year old.

Yeah, eating out with five children is great. While Ace was playing with the playground bully, I only had to go in there once to tell the bully to let go of Ace’s legs as he pleaded for mercy.

Fun times. Oh, and Josiah decided to take off in the play area and go all the way to the very top of it. Only to discover/decide, he was scared and scream and cry for several minutes before I realized what was going on. Zoe managed to pull and tug him down a little ways before he hit a landing and wouldn’t budge. Guess who got to go get him?? With Ceili Rain in the sling and my wonderful attire of a very flowy skirt, I climbed Mt. Playground and managed to pull Josiah all the way down. When I reached him, he had managed to wipe snot all over the side of his face among other places, I’m sure. I got him cleaned up. It was also about that time that another mother realized what I was doing and came to see if she coudl help. Unfortunately, by that time, the crisis was over and Ceili Rain still sat snoozing. I managed to pull a muscle though. Yea me!

So, How Do You Do It? Part 3 (Meals)

I’m still here. Very busy with swim lessons and planning parties (Josiah, Mark, Ace all in the span of a month…not to mention Ge, Granddaddy and cousin J…along with Papa & Grandmere’s anniversary and cousins N & TJ…but those I don’t have to plan parties for) and getting geared up for VBS.

So, while I gather my wits about me, I’ll do a quick blog on meal planning.

I started menu planning before kids. It kept my brain organized and kept us poor college student and social worker from eating out too much. It also helped to keep us on budget. So, I’ll break down how we plan.

Breakfast: We used to do just cereal but recently I noticed that my big ol’ boys are downing a bag of generic cheerios in less than a week, so it was getting pretty expensive. Besides, aside from needing buttermilk, I can make biscuits pretty quickly. I always have flour on hand since we make our own, so it wasn’t that big of a switch to hot meals. The kids enjoy them too. So, for now, I get up in the morning and make what I feel like or have on hand…to include oatmeal, biscuits, eggs, toast. Don’t think I’m superwoman…really, biscuits are quick and cook fast. And I usually make eggs while the biscuits are cooking.

Lunch: Sandwiches, short, plan and quick. About once a week, I throw in hot dogs (kosher, because they’re just plain healthier than those others) or chicken nuggets (did you know Tyson makes all natural, no antibiotics, no hormones chicken nuggest?? Yummy and quick)

Supper (or in the south, Dinner): Now here’s where the major planning comes in. Each year I make out three meal lists of ten meals each. I then put those in a folder with the recipes. I have the notebooks labeled by month (four months per notebook). Each month I pull out the corresponding notebook and a calendar that I keep posted in the kitchen. I mark out days I know we’ll be out or out of town and then proceed to fill in using my menu lists for suppers. I typically do not cook on Sundays and Fridays are pizza days (which of late means take out or frozen but hopefull as soon as little miss’s schedule rounds out we’ll be doing more homemade…and as soon as I fine a good homemade pizza dough recipe…any help??).

I use Advantage Cooking software to plug in the recipes I’m using (and any special recipes) and it puts together my shopping list. I also print out a recipe inventory. I love that program. I’ll also say, though, that recipezaar.com and others will allow you to keep a “recipe box” which will help you print out shopping lists as well.

Now, a word about freezer cooking! Love it!! Because I did some freezer cooking, I was able to put back almost two months worth of meals before Ceili Rain was born. Way back when I had just two children, I would cook once a month and freeze the meals then pull them out. I haven’t been able to do that lately, but hopefully will get back in the routine before we start back to school…which will allow more time for instruction and less for cooking. For more information about freezer cooking you can go to 30 Day Gourmet. That was the best resource and book that helped me get started. And, I do not cook casseroles all the time. We’ll have steak or grilled chicken or baked chicken or stir fry, all from the freezer. Not to mention, enchiladas or some kind of tacos.

Menu planning is a great way to stick to your budget or help you create one. I’ll work on getting a post done about shopping.

Look What I Did!

I went in search of a pattern to make a swim skirt for Zoe since I realized this year, that I don’t walk around in my underwear in public and I didn’t want to wear a swimsuit that appeared as though I did. And that I didn’t want my daughter to either.

So, I found these directions for a skirt called the Lazy Day Skirt. Simple enough. I made a very, very basic swim skirt from the directions and then decided I’d use a piece of fabric I had to make a regular skirt for Zoe. She loves the skirt! I was thrilled considering the last time I tried to make something for her she hated it and never wore it. This, she loved*.

To say it’s easy is putting it mildly. It’s super easy! I finished her skirt in about 30 minutes and sewing novice, I ain’t. I loved hers so much that while Mark and I were out on our date we found a Quilting shop and I picked up some cute fabric and made me one.

The difference on mine and Zoe’s is that I had to make it much bigger. I measured my waist and doubled the size. I took that measurement and divided it by two and cut out the coordinating material into four panels. I sewed those together and then followed the directions from there. Except I was in a hurry and missed a step.

The kids dear Grandmere has said she would like to come over this summer and teach me how to sew. I gladly welcome the instruction and am hoping to make this in the near future both for Zoe and for me (and eventually Ceili Rain). We don’t need them to be super long, but to cover our rears so they’re not sticking out would be great!

*Please focus on the skirt and not the fact that she paired a shirt with contrasting patterns with the skirt.
