Gardening for Dummies…that’s us!

Mark and I have now admitted, we are Landscaping/Gardening Dummies. Hence the reason we live in a city…and also the reason our yard looks like my dad’s head (sorry daddy).

However, this weekend there is a nice big sale at a local wholesale nursery. And this year, I have a neighbor who is a landscaping pro! So S came over with his family yesterday and looked at our yard (like he doesn’t see it everyday driving and walking the neighborhood, bless his heart) and came up with a few plant ideas that I possibly couldn’t kill and wouldn’t look like they were thrown there.

Mark’s doing church stuff this weekend, so I was going to brave the sale alone trudging to and fro with 3 gallon plants and a double stroller and a 4 and 5 year old who would rather run around the plants since all of them are outside. Yea, that would be fun. My sweet husband came to the rescue and nicely asked S if he could get our plants (I told him to even offer to help with gas money) and he’s agreed.

I’m still going if something happens with S’s plans. My yard is begging me to.

Right now my goal is to get our big front bed done and have it tie into the addition so the addition doesn’t really look like an addition. Make sense??? Yea, not to me either but I have a rough drawing and orders on where to plant/transplant.

So, Mark and I were talking about it last night and discussed how much we don’t know about gardening, basic plant care, and even lawn care (remember my dad’s head…sorry again daddy). I told him that this was yet another sign we were not inclined to go “agrarian.” Wish we could, but just not smart enough right now and definitely happy where God’s planted us…I just hope that “His stuff” grows!

What’s Up with the Cat???

Champ, our youngest of two cats, has been acting really weird lately. Keep in mind that he’s around 11 years old…no spring chicken, so he’s set in his ways. Well, Saturday night, he came to our room about every two hours to meow. Not just once, but several times…enough to get me awake.

So Sunday night, not to be outdone by his antics the previous night, Champ decided to sleep right up against Mark and purr every time I moved. He hasn’t slept with us in several years (at least since kids). And his purr sounds like a freight train (especially when it’s right near your ear.

Then to top it off, last night, he decided that right smack on my head is the best place to sleep. I’m just not a cuddler, especially with a cat that has not really wanted to cuddle much at night in a loooong time. I also get hot really easily at night. This didn’t bode well with me, and I tried to move him three times (he was also purring right on my head) before I gave up and flipped around. That worked fine until something woke me up and I panicked trying to figure out who moved the door and what happened to our bathroom. I was also incredibly hot because my feet were not next to the fan (yes, I know I’m weird, T can back me up though!). So, I answered the call of the bladder and returned to sit on the edge of the bed for a little while until I cooled off and decided the best option was to lay on the floor. As I got a pallet made on the floor, Champ decided it was time to get up and roam the house. I got to sleep in bed peacefully until Mark left for work and Champ decided that it was time to drive me crazy again.

I haven’t had this little sleep since Zoe was a newborn and had colic! If I don’t get sleep tonight, I may just go a little more crazy!!

Of Squirrels and Cheese

So we were out doing some much needed yard work on a lovely afternoon on Saturday. I walked around the side of the house fertilizing and fungiciding our one little rose bush when a putrid smell reached my nostrils. I almost threw up, and that’s something I really haven’t felt the need to do in a while. I casually informed my knight that there might be something dead around the side of the house. I actually wonder if he thought I had lost my mind, but he came traipsing over with shovel in hand. He scraped the leaves from the rose bush and walked around the house and low and behold, a squirrel had found it’s resting place right up against the side of our new addition. Mark gave it a proper burial (while I suggested a grocery sack and the trash can…just call me Sensitive).

And on a different note, Liam is in a new Awana thing for 2 year olds now. It’s called Puggles, and I along with several other people think they have some pretty sharp looking t-shirts. Anyway, he’s always so cute when he comes out telling us all sorts of things. Basically, they are learning about the six days of creation. He’s been coming out reviewing the things he’s heard us talk about in school with Ace. I’ve been sharing his cutenes with his leaders but have guessed that they’ve gotten tired of hearing about it, so I’ll just post it here.

So tonight, I got home from dropping off Zoe’s friend and I cuddled up to Liam and asked him what he learned in Puggles tonight. He kept saying Puggles over and over again.

Finally, I asked him what they talked about that God had made.

“Ummm, cheese.”

So there you have the profound theological truth. God made cheese!

Good Deals!

Yesterday evening, I was able to go to the big consignment sale pre-sale with a friend. Normally, you can’t go unless you’ve volunteered, but a volunteer can bring a friend and just pay $10. To me, it’s worth it not to have to get up early and hope I get some of the things I need. So here’s the deals, and completely worth the extra $10…

**Playpen-Graco basic playpen for $12! It looks great. The mat doesn’t even look stained. I’m keeping it downstairs and it will probably travel with us. We have an arm’s reach co-sleeper that I use for the newborn in our room, so this is great having one we can keep in the playroom. Josiah has enjoyed staying in one while we do some of school…it’s kind of his away time from everyone else.
**Red Ruby slippers for $5 that match Zoe’s Dorothy dress that I got a much smaller sale last week (the dress was $10 and is going for $30 on ebay).
**$1 sweaters/shirts for me…some cute maternity clothes
**A ton of $1 nice condition shirts for Ace and all of his pjs for $2 or less.
**Anne of Greene Gables, animated, on dvd for $4 (two separate videos)
**Windsuit for Ace from Children’s Place for $3! I kept checking it to see what was wrong with it. It’s very cute red, white, and blue.

Now the not so good deals…people had marked their completely used and stained blue jeans for boys for $6 and up. I even found a pair for $11! I also found a very cute but worn dress for Zoe to wear around the house and get dirty in…it was $8! I’m so cheap, but I can’t see paying that much for clothes, no matter who “made” them, when I can run to Wal-Mart and get pretty much the same thing in better condition!

Peck a Dee and For Gether

While walking around the neighborhood yesterday (yes, I’ve actually walked twice this week), Ace noticed a bird and said, “I think it’s a Peck-a-dee bird.”

He was pretty sure of himself. I told him I’d never heard of one of those.

He replied, “You know, it bangs it’s self up against a tree.”

“Oh,” I said. “I’ve heard of a woodpecker that does that.”

“Yes ma’am. A woodpecker Peck-a-dee,” he replied in a matter of fact manner.

We sent Liam and Ace to potty before supper one night this week and were surprised to hear the toilet flush one time and both boys came running back to the table.

“Liam (since he’s usually the one who won’t go), did you go potty.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Did you flush?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“But you both came back to the table at the same time.”

“Yes, we went ‘for’gether.” Liam told me.

Just picture this: Both boys will go potty at night before bath since there’s just something about getting nekkid and realizing you have to go potty (at least for them and confirmed by Mark), so they stand on either side of the potty and go. I know that’s really probably redneck but it saves the trouble of one doing a “holdin’ it” potty dance or running to our bathroom to go. So now, that’s the thing for Liam. Especially if Ace is in the bathroom at the same time. He announces that they need to go “for” gether. Ace sweetly corrects him that it’s together. Ace also is not very good at watching what he’s doing…hmmm. I’m hoping this will encourage Liam on our adventures to get him completely potty trained!

I’ve mentioned to Mark, more than once, that I wished the boys’ bathroom was a little bigger so we could install a urinal. Oh well…just dreaming!

Baby #5 Update

I had a prenatal appointment today and was able to hear the heartbeat. For once, Mark stayed home with the kids. We thought it would be easier that way for one time.

However, when they stuck the Doppler on (yes, like the radar thing but different), my nurse couldn’t find the heartbeat. She searched for awhile then Dr. J took over and Nurse D tried to distract me by talking about nothing. Dr. J shushed her and we heard the faint little heartbeat. Faint because it was just quiet but it was very strong and Dr. J said it was healthy. I was glad and breathed a sigh of relief. I just knew something like that was going to happen when Mark wasn’t there. He also took my physical paperwork for the adoption and so, hopefully, we’ll get that squared away soon and will be able to have our homestudy finished.

So, time for a poll, shall we? What do you think the baby is? A boy or a girl??? Place your vote. Voting will end on October 29th since that is when I’ll have my u/s and we should be able to see what God has in store for us with #5.

We are very blessed, and grateful for a healthy baby so far. Please continue to pray for this little one. And, I am feeling much better. Current cravings include oranges, tomatoes (in salads and foods) and milk. Heartburn is in full swing but Zantac should combat that now!

The Name Game

Well, we’re heading into 14 weeks of pregnancy #5 and here’s a little game for everyone.

First of all, yes, we’ll find out what we’re having. I feel like Zoe deserves to be prepared if she’s going to have another brother! Not that she’ll love him any less.

Secondly, before any of our pregnancies (usually a few months before we get pregnant) we usually have a general idea of names. Even if we don’t have the names solid, they’re pretty much set into the first few weeks after we find out we’re pregnant.

With this pregnancy, the idea of picking out a boys’ name has never occurred to us. We thought there would be a break between #4 and our adopted daughter. God had some wonderful other plans, so now we sit, without a boys’ name.

Really, we have a name picked out, but I’m not sharing until u/s day (ultrasound day). I’m also open to ideas if I hear a name I like. I thought I would challenge all my faithful readers and those who just popped in.

I am speaking of boys’ names, because, let’s face it, Mark and I have been waiting on another girl and have had that name picked out since I was pregnant with Ace. And the odds of us having a girl are pretty slim…just look at the pictures from his side of the family.

Here’s the Name Game rules:

  1. No normal everyday run of the mill names. If it’s in the top 100 in the past few years then it’s out (okay, Zoe’s name was an exception but we had already chosen it before we found the name lists and it was waaaay at the bottom when we looked). So take out John, Robert, definitely William (since my cousins, all on the same side, think they should all have children named William…I digress).
  2. Points for choosing a name from history (that’s unusual) and/or a literary author name (but has no history of immoral behavior).
  3. It has to mean something good. We don’t want a “tree” for a child nor do we want a “cart driver” or a “brook.” Also all the Mac/Mc names are out since they mean “son of.” Unless you want to name him McMark (hmmm). Here’s another example: Blaine, which I happen to like, means “tall and slender.” What if we have a short and fat kid? What a complex! Double check the meanings, I just didn’t associate that Liam’s name was the equivalent of “strong willed defender.” See what I got myself into! Another example: Zoe’s name means “life.” Ace’s name means “unity.” Josiah’s name means “fire from God.” Pretty cool names to live up to!
  4. It doesn’t have to be a Biblical name but…cool uncommon ones are welcome (meaning, no Hosea’s or Hananiah…although I like both, they just don’t flow for me).
  5. It has to go with his middle name that we’ve definitely settled on. It’s Ian and it means “God’s gracious gift.” Now, I know that Ian is a really cool first name, however, a friend from church (and I think a blog reader) has a child named Josiah and one named Ian and I don’t want her to think we’re copying her. Plus, I want an uncommon cool first name.

There ya go. Leave a comment for a name suggestion. If we like it better than the two we’re looking at, we may use it. I’m curious to see what name other people think would fit into our little brood!

Babysitters???

Our friend who recently got married, T, and her husband, K, came over to babysit while we attended a church banquet this past weekend. Of course, they said they were babysitting. T put Josiah to work and K got educated on the finer points of Narnia lore via a 2 year old (really, how many two year olds can tell the difference between a centaur and a minotaur and know them by character names???)

Family Pictures

So, here are the good ones…

Here we all are!!! What a crew!

Grandmere and the girls..see what our odds are of having a girl…yep, only God can do it!

The men (and boys)

Grandmere and her boys
See Ace the baby lover! Then he tried to push him out of his lap.

We bribed Ace that if he smiled in all the other pictures that he could have one made with just him and Grandmere. I think he is really going to love this picture for years to come.
Now, see why we all can’t resist him?!

Group Picture Time

Please enjoy the many attempts we made at taking a decent family picture. Yes, we did get one out of our camera…

This would be all of us. Note Zoe’s meltdown at the beginning and sudden recovery, which included a daddy talk.

The grandkids with Grandmere and Papa. Quite a treat to watch Josiah’s duck and all the many faces.

This is everyone lined up (with the exception of Josiah and twins). Read from the right to the left…little stairsteps. Pay close attention to Josiah’s duck as it jumps down, then up, and then flies away.
