The Pool

Now we come to the scene of the crime…I was a little late getting to the pool. Basically, all our friends and family went to the pool while Ceili Rain got in a good nap. So, I walked up a hill, down a hill, up a hill to get to the pool. By the time we got there, everyone was getting out of the pool. I was determined, after my workout, to get Ceili Rain in. So, in we went.

Not sure what Uncle R was cheesing it for but he was.

All the kids went on the deck with the BDs and the next thing I knew Zoe was screaming. I turn around and see Liam’s little rear running back and forth on the deck. I about lost it. Mark thought it was quite funny too…but he had more composure and told him to clothe himself.
They sure are cute in their towels!

The next day, we were getting ready to go to an indoor water park and Liam informed me, “Mommy, I’m not going to take my swimsuit off again.”

“Great! Liam that’s a great idea. Why did you do it yesterday at the pool?”

“I just wanted to be naked.”

Lovely!!

Around Gatlinburg

We walked around Gatlinburg on a couple of the days. On one day, we (being me and the BDs) decided we should have funnel cake and ice cream for lunch. After Mark stopped looking at us like we were insane, we did it. To top it off, there was a place called “All Sauced Up” that had samples to try. Yummmmy! When the kids got tired of the place, they asked to have their pictures made in front of the store.

After attending the Dixie Stampede one night, we perused the gift shop (and were the last ones in there as well). Guess what my boys’ found…

Yep, they’re boys.
And a couple of cute kids’ shots from downtown Gatlinburg.

The Great Smokies

Here come our pictures from our vacation. After finishing up a homeschool conference from Titus2.com, I’m refreshed and recharged and focused and ready for the next week. I think.

So, we traveled up to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for our vacation. This vacation is a sequel to a vacation we took two years ago. A sequel in that we met up with Mark’s college roommates and their families for “Bamapalooza 09.” The weather was a little wet, but we all enjoyed our time together and exploring the outdoors and the towns. Not to mention a girls’ shopping trip!

On the way up the mountains, this was a view Mark, the kids and our borrowed daughters (two teens who agreed to come with us and be attacked help out. I, however, was waffling through cigarette smoke and listening to motorcycles roar by while trying to get Ceili Rain to pay attention enough to nurse. We got to spend about 45 minutes in Cherokee in a car, in traffic while looking at every kind of motorcycle known to man (apparently there was some kind of convention going on there).

On Monday, we hiked. You just got to click on the picture to read the sign. It’s enough to make a mama paranoid. Very grateful for our borrowed daughters (oh, we’ll just call them BD for short) then!

I love seeing the sun through the trees and since this was one of the few days we saw the sun, I’m glad I got this picture.
A nice big rock for my boys to climb on!

One of our friends.

Zoe enjoyed the climbing too but was never too involved to not stop and pose for the camera.

The BDs themselves!! Such beautiful and responsible young ladies! Except they hiked in their Converse. Which looked cool but I don’t think was that comfortable.

Sorry, I forgot to turn J rightside up. Not one of mine but he was adorable in his hiking gear.

Made it! To the top of the rock. Not the end of the hike.

A view of on eof the mountains. Some of the leaves are starting to change too…as can be seen by the picture.

The Great Smokies Part 2

Still hiking, but Liam, being ever so cute, bummed a ride from this beautiful lady (one of the wife friends).

At the falls! This was a fairly moderate hike. And, even though Ace didn’t want to hike, it was a great one to do. I don’t think he complained much on it…which is a surprise. And the reward of a cool breeze and pretty waterfall was great. Josiah kept pointing at it saying, “Wa wa fall”

A man pointed out this salamander before we left. Slimy, no? Thankfully, there was a barrier to keep my little gooey ooey boys (and girl) from touching it.

On the way back down, taking a rest.
Yes, it took two to walk with Liam. I’ll admit that.
Liam kept waffling back and forth trying to decide if was going to marry one or the other.

And the big reward was we got to see a bear when we got back to our car!! One of our friends said she saw two small bears. We were trying to figure out where the mama was as this bear was quite small in black bear standards (I think). At any rate, we had talked about paying about $10 per person to take the kids to see a bear and other animals but free was waaaay better. He was very high up in the tree just chomping at the branches. Very cool!

So, where are the pictures???

I know I’m being inconsistent. Right now, my kids need me more than this here thing. We’re struggling with attitudes more than I remember in a long time. That among other getting back from vacation activities. I, hopefully, will be back with my daily posts next week.

In the meantime, any ideas on how to deal with tantrums from a 6 year old and 5 year old (mostly because they won’t use their words to talk to me, they, for some reason, think yelling and screaming and crying and flailing will get results) are appreciated.

Pretty Neat!

We’re still here. Right now I’m enjoying the sounds of whining as we start back to school after a week long break…ahhh, music to my ears!

A few weeks ago, I applied and was accepted to be a reviewer at Mama Buzz. I’m excited about being able to try out new things. My kids are great at breaking figuring out how toys, books, and other things will hold up around our house! I got our first product to review in yesterday and am looking forward to going through it with Zoe.

Today, I’m the Featured blogger at Mama Buzz! So, for a little vanity sake, check out what I wrote and what Melissa (one of the main bloggers there wrote). If only just to humor me!

And we’re back!

Sorry for the delay! We’re home from our vacation to the mountains. I’ve got to get the pictures uploaded so look for posts next week.

Aside from a three year old who felt the need to streak after playing in the pool it was a pretty mellow trip!

We borrowed two teenagers to go with us and when I realized I could ask for their help, they were really useful. I’m so used to doing it all on my own or with Mark’s help that sometimes it slipped our mind to hand off a child or have them buckle someone up or watch them. They were a ton of fun though and I’m afraid they’ve become addicted to the game of pool.

So stay tuned, we’ll get back into the swing of things next week.

Worship-It’s not just for Church

So now you’ve taken a peek at how we worship (or attempt to) at church…now here’s how we do it at home…

What?! You can’t believe we actually worship at home. Well, sometimes it’s a bit like the zoo you see at church but most days we can do it.

We have just started doing worship in the mornings. I would love for Mark to lead both of our worship times, however, he has to be at work early so he doesn’t get home as the kids are going to bed, so it’s up to me in the mornings.

So morning worship consists of: We sing two worship songs and then study the Bible discussing a character trait. I am using Courtship Connection’s Character Building for Families Volume1. Basically, it takes a character trait and then studies what the Bible says about that trait. It’s been great for the kids, especially since I’ve combined it with the charts they suggest using. The kids have been enjoying trying to fill in their charts. I am loving that we are getting into God’s Word first thing in the morning. Simple, no frills, straight from God’s Word teaching. Can’t get any better.

Now for what we sing: We were finding hymns and printing them off and such but then after asking a friend about hymnals and costs, he showed up with two! We were pumped! Especially since these two hymnals are the newer ones and contain many praise songs as well as many older hymns (and newer ones too). Right now, we are singing accapella (which if any stranger were around, they’d have to plug their ears…we make a joyful noise in our family). We mix up what we sing between old hymns and praise songs, but we strive for all the songs we sing to fit our theological beliefs. Hymns were not written in Biblical time and we know our God is Soveriegn and can use other people, through His music to speak to us…and so, hymns, praise songs…as long as it’s theologically sound, we’re good with it. As far as the “repetitiveness” of praise songs. I know many a hymn that does the same thing (the choruses of any number of them!). I also know many praise songs that have no chorus and no repeats.

I have to say there is nothing like hearing your two year old (Liam way back when) singing, “Up from the grave He arose,” or “In Christ alone, my hope is found.” Mmmm, sweet music to a mama’s ears.

Now to evening worship: We started out with a kid’s rhyming Bible and other things…just reading a little at night. This past Spring we noticed that Zoe’s eyes were glazing over…she had heard the same Bible story over and over and over again…it was time to move on and find something a little deeper. Then, for Father’s Day, I found these books called Balancing the Sword. Armed with a great coupon, I was able to purchase them for very little. They basically can take you through the Bible twice (one per volume). There are comprehension (non-denominational/non-theological…just straight up comprehension) questions on average for every two verses in the Bible. You can set up your reading plan with the software included and get to it. Again, seeing our children sit down with their Bible, it’s beautiful. Zoe is now reading some as we read through it. Ace even gets to read a verse or two. And we all work to answer the questions about what we just read. Mark and I are seeing and able to point out to the kids more and more evidences of Christ’s prophetical coming in the Old Testament…and we’re only in Genesis! After reading our Scripture and answering questions, we sing two “hymns” and pray. And yes, Mark leads us through all of this time (he’s a waaay better singer than me. I sing to my own tune if anyone must know).

Family worship is great for us as we use it to practice sitting and listening (both skills that are necessary when sitting in “big church”). I’m teaching Josiah to sit in my lap while we are going through our family worship. And he can do it (most of the time)!

When we are out and about and have to miss family worship for several nights, we can definitely see the difference in our kids! Worship brings us closer to each other, but more importantly to God and His Word. We are learning and leading our kids to have a desire for and knowledge of His Word. And that is what Faith in a Family is all about.

So, how do you worship as a family? Please leave a comment and share! I love getting new ideas.

Now, why do we really homeschool? Is it that important to teach our kids at home? Why not just turn them over to the church acitvities and government schools? Stay tuned (If I totally haven’t offended you yet. Me, watching the numbers of viewers plummet)…

And we’re off

and, so far, in one piece. This week I’ve been to the doctor twice and Wal-Mart twice. Not too bad. I wasn’t anticipating the doctor trips but I overestimated the Wal-Mart trips.

I took Josiah in to the doctor on Tuesday for congestion. Turns out he’s got an ear infection.

Somehow, Ceili Rain gouged or had her eye gouged and has a big scratch on the side of her eyeball (no where near effecting the vision…she hasn’t even acted like it bothered her…tough being the fifth kid). This happened Thursday and as the day progressed it began to look worse and I just didn’t feel I could wait until Friday(per the doctor’s orders) to take her in. So we trekked it to after hours. By God’s providence, there were very little actual sick children in the office. The doctor looked at her eye for five minutes and then told me his story about travel ordeals while going to Ireland…very interesting and made me want to go (but not use the airline he had used). So, she came home with an eye antibiotic. I’m very grateful that the cut wasn’t close to the cornea or pupil. I can’t really say when she did it or had it done to her (by a sibling who can’t say that he actually did it because he’s two and doesn’t talk much, is this a run on sentence? Are you cringing mom?). If I can get her to turn her head, I’ll post a picture for all those who like gruesome pictures!

And, I forgot to mention that Liam climbed onto the changing table, got down scissors I use to cut up wipes, and proceeded to chop up things in Zoe’s room…with the help of Ace. They didn’t get big things like clothes (except some ribbons for one of Zoe’s dresses) or bedspreads or curtains. This was while trying to get Zoe taught up before leaving. Mama was not happy!

All that to say, with antibiotics, tylenol, motrin, thermometer and what ever other drugs we can squeeze into our overstuffed van, we’re off! Oh, and no scissors thankyouverymuch.
