Josiah’s Nine Month Check Up

Josiah had his nine month check up. He’s doing great in some areas. Including babbling and making eye contact. He’s also sitting up very well.

However, we have two areas of concern which in turn are prayer requests from us.

First, he’s lost weight. He’s down to 18 lbs., 4 oz. from 18 lbs., 11 oz. at his six month check up. Realistically he should be three or more pounds heavier from six months. Dr. B tried to reassure me that he’s been sick (but not that much). We talked about how he’s been eating baby food really well. He eats about two to three times a day. He’s taking most of our table foods blended up and loves them. In fact, he refuses to eat pureed/liquidfied baby food now! He’d rather eat food with texture and more flavor. He eats about 4 oz. of baby food at each meal…and more at breakfast as he has cereal mixed with fruit.

He also nurses five times a day. He was on a nursing strike but that was for only two days and he still nursed a little each of those days.

So, Mark and I are a little perplexed about why he’s losing weight. Dr. B. told me to “slap some butter on his veggies” and I will willingly oblige! I also picked up avocado (yuck) at the store and am mixing it in with his foods twice a day. I’m trying to give him foods that are high in fat but healthy.

His height has dropped in percentages, but he has progressed. Dr. B said this is a good sign that it’s not his thyroid or a growth hormone problem.

Secondly, he’s not crawling nor making an attempt to feed himself. He tried to pick up food but it’s almost as if he doesn’t register he has it in his hand and opens it. Dr. B said he’s a little weak/floppy (but not like cerebral palsy floppy) on the upper half of his body. We’re looking for/thinking about ways to help him strengthen his upper body.

As I said before, Dr. B tried to reassure me that everything was okay. But, at the same time, she wants to see him in six weeks for a weight height check. Dr. B doesn’t do anything over the top and wouldn’t want to see him unless there was a real need or concern…so…please pray.

Here are my sweet baby’s stats:
18 lbs. 4 oz. (10-25% down from 65%)
29 1/2 inches long (90% down from 95%)
18 3/4 inches head (97% up 7% 🙂

Zoe’s Five Year Check Up

Yes, I know her birthday was in December, but it was easier to wait and bring her in when Josiah had a check up. Liam had his turn in January since he was younger. So, this time it was Zoe’s.

She had a great check up. One shot and she was non to thrilled about it. But she was fine when she got to pick a toy from the birthday boxes. Her hemoglobin was great too. No big worries. Lots of great stuff. But then, I knew she was an awesome kid.

Oh and yesterday, she lost another tooth. She got to use her special tooth fairy pouch and she even drew a picture for the tooth fairy. I’ve heard the tooth fairy loved it!

Here’s her stats:
90% on her weight
95% on height at a whopping 46 1/4 inches
80% total on BMI

My girl’s tall!

for several reasons…
1. Theater week last week

3. Co-hosting three baby showers all at the same time
4. Sick Josiah (well only on Sunday but getting over cold now)
5. Josiah on nursing strike
6. Josiah on nursing strike because he’s getting FOUR teeth at once…actually three now since one broke through.

Showering Babies

The Sunday after the ballet performance, I had the privilege of helping give a shower for three friends. We decided to give them all a shower at one time, because they were all due within a month of each other, they’re all in our Sunday School class, and they were all having girls! My friend, Annette, and I strived to make it very unique and special for each of them. It was a drop-in shower, so we only had light refreshments.

Instead of paying an arm and leg for three baby shower cakes, we decided to do these cupcake towers. One for each mommy! We decorated the cupcakes with the first initial of each baby’s name and then did the toppers (see below).

Needless to say, Annette and I were covered in cupcake icing and colors all day Saturday and Sunday.

Annette made this beautiful baby buggy fruit bowl!

Lest you think we’re talented…I think it helped that we both shared brain cells on this one and did a lot of brain storming. We used the pink/brown motif which is “in” but which I think is really pretty. I pray that the expectant moms enjoyed all the aspects of the shower and felt their babies were welcomed in to this world as a blessing by us and their friends and family who came.

I’ll post what I made for each of them on my other website! I so enjoy doing the burp cloths and nursing covers and the moms seemed excited about receiving them and using them.

The Roar of Love

Starring

Zoe
(okay, I didn’t realize until I was getting ready to put these pictures on here that she was making those faces…it’s the makeup, I guess, but I promise she doesn’t always look half drugged)

and Ace!
(he’s the one with the black shoes)

The Stars with the man who made it all happen (notice Zoe’s pose)!

Mark’s parents came down to see Zoe and Ace perform. We were thrilled that they got to see them. Zoe and Ace are both saying they want to do soccer next year. We’ll see. I’m going to miss ballet but I know they need to try different things.

Okay, one of the coolest things (besides seeing my kids on the “Southeast’s largest stage”) was Focus on the Family being there! We were so surprised and thrilled. There was a video intro from Jim Daly the president of FofF and there was one of James Dobson’s personal assistants! How cool is that??!!

Liam…the Night Demon??

Okay, it’s not what you think.

As we were finishing up our Truth Project meeting last night, a couple (one that’ s engaged) asked to borrow our baby name book. She was flipping through names and calling them out.

“Lillith means Night Demon.”

“Euww,” we said, “Not that one.”

About that time, we heard a loud growl and charging down the hall is Liam with sword and play gun. He took a big football stance and growled at all of us with sword and gun waving. Right on his heels was another couple’s child with a slightly quieter growl.

What timing! Priceless!

Sweet Sounds

I wish I had a video of this, but I don’t. Josiah is now making the cutest noises, along with the raspberries. This weekend, he was laying on the floor playing and looked up at Ace saying, “babababa.” So, we interpreted it as Bubba. Now when we try to get him to say it, he moves him mouth and occasionally gets the noise to come out. Very cute!

Oh, and a praise. Baby Emma came home from the hospital on Friday night. She still has sores but is healing much better. Please continue to pray for her and her family as they deal with the effects of, what they believe, is a genetic trait.

Painting…

Okay, here’s the set up: I was working on finishing up baby gifts for some friends (lots of friends) and the kids asked Mark if they could water paint…he let them. Here’s the results!

It took Liam a couple of pages before he realized that he was painting with only water. Mark’s so sneaky!

Zoe the “artist”

Ace hard at work with Black! It’s a dark world he lives in sometimes.

Bread Making Update

Well we were supposed to get our grain a couple of weeks ago, but I chose to dispose of my inner contents and didn’t want to infect anyone with the same epidemic…so, we ordered our grain (just a small amount…shipping can be killer) and are waiting on it to come in. My sister-in-law recommended these tin pans instead of using the aluminum ones (the ones you find in a store) since they don’t go well with fresh flour AND have been linked to Alzheimer’s. In the picture below, we have the mill, kitchen scale (purchased at Wal-Mart, so I don’t have a link for it), and a cookbook from Bread for Life plus my shiny tinplates loaf pans. They’re shiny because I haven’t actually done any of my messy cooking.

I’ve tried one recipe from the cookbook using store brought whole wheat flour and I think it turned out good. We haven’t actually got to try it.

I decided to make Hot Cross Buns for breakfast this weekend. While this has nothing really to do with my bread making other than I go a little more practice with yeast, here are the results! These buns are adapted into a Christian tradition and are typically served (mostly in the UK) on Good Friday. I didn’t realize it would take overnight, however, so we didn’t have them until Saturday morning. I, personally, didn’t think they turned out right because they tasted like rubber but the kids and Mark seemed to like them. At least they look pretty.

Side note: I understand that most people won’t be interested…but I figured my sister-in-law would like to see it all…so this one’s for you Betsy!!
